The first mission station Livingstonia , on the south side of Lake Malawi, was founded in 1875 by the missionary James Stewart and built with the support of the Central African Trading Company . In 1880 the location changed to Bandawe on the west side of the lake.

Livingstonia is essentially a mission and 130 bed hospital (David Gordon Memorial Hospital) of the Church of Central Africa Presbyterian (CCAP) affiliated with the Presbyterian Church in Ireland and works closely with the sister mission in Ekendeti .

The church has a secondary school and a technical school with boarding school for 1,800 students, with the church providing accommodation for an additional 500 people. A total of about 3700 people are there. There are plans to build a college for education and theology. There is a guest house and a private camp. In the rainy season, all-wheel drive is essential, because the place is on a steep slope between Nyika and Lake Malawi . The village offers a panoramic view of the rugged Livingstone Mountains on the opposite Tanzanian bank of Lake Malawi, above which it was built directly on a cliff. The Manchewe Falls are nearby.

Not far from there are the Mchenga and Kaziwiziwi coal mines on a deposit with around two million tons of high-quality coal .
