Alena Buyx

Alena Buyx (born September 29, 1977 in Osnabrück ) is a German professor of medical ethics and chairwoman of the German Ethics Council .

Career

Buyx studied medicine , philosophy , sociology and health sciences at the Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster , York University (GB) and the University College London from 1997 to 2004 and was supported by the German National Academic Foundation. She received her doctorate in 2005 and in the same year obtained her full license to practice medicine and a master's degree in philosophy and sociology from the University of Münster. From 2006 to 2008 she worked there as a research assistant at the Institute for Ethics, History and Theory of Medicine. She was then an Academic Scholar in the Harvard University Program in Ethics and Health at Harvard Medical School from 2008 to 2009 . From 2009 to 2012 she was Deputy Director of the UK Ethics Council ( Nuffield Council on Bioethics , London).

In 2013, she completed her habilitation at the University of Münster and the associated venia legendi in ethics, history and theory of medicine. From 2012 to 2014 she headed the DFG-Emmy Noether group “Bioethics and Political Philosophy” (University of Münster) and was a Senior Research Fellow of Public Policy at University College London until 2015 .

In 2014, the Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel appointed her as professor of medical ethics and at the same time she was co-director of the Institute for Experimental Medicine at the University of Kiel.

In 2016 she was appointed to the German Ethics Council. There she headed the working group on interventions in the human germline from December 2017 to May 2019.

In September 2018 she followed the call of the Technical University of Munich (TUM) to the W3 professorship for ethics in medicine and health technologies. At the same time she is the director of the Institute for the History and Ethics of Medicine at TUM.

Her research spans the entire field of biomedical and public health ethics, with a particular focus on the ethics of medical innovations and health technologies, research ethics, issues of solidarity and justice in contexts such as public health and health care, as well as novel participatory approaches in biomedicine and beyond out. Since 2019 she has been a member of the WHO Expert Advisory Committee on Developing Global Standards for Governance and Oversight of Human Genome Editing. After being reappointed to the German Ethics Council, she was elected its chairman in May 2020. She is committed to communication with the public, gives lectures on a wide variety of medical ethical topics and appears regularly on television and other media.

She is married and has two kids.
