Alessandro Melani

Alessandro Melani (born February 4, 1639 in Pistoia , † October 3, 1703 in Rome ) was an Italian composer , singer and bandmaster of the Baroque.

Life

Alessandro Melani came from a family of musicians from Pistoia. His six brothers all became musicians, including four castrati, the most famous of whom was Atto Melani . Alessandro began his training and career between 1646 and 1660 as a singer at the Cathedral of Pistoia. Afterwards he was Kapellmeister at the cathedral of Orvieto (1661) and of Ferrara , before he replaced his eldest brother Jacopo Melani (1623–1676) at the cathedral of Pistoia in June 1667 . Only a few months later he became Kapellmeister of the Papal Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore , who was recently elected by Pope Clement IX. preferred church. From 1672 he was Kapellmeister at San Luigi dei Francesi , a position he held for 26 years.

Melani's work encompasses both ecclesiastical and profane compositions. Above all, Melani made a name for himself as an opera composer; his works were premiered in many Italian cities, but also in Vienna. His compositions also include the lost pasticcio La Santa Dimna, figlia del re d'Irlanda (1687). Its 1st act was by Alessandro Melani, while the 2nd act was composed by Bernardo Pasquini and the 3rd act by Alessandro Scarlatti . He also published three collections of eight- and ten-part motets , as well as eight oratorios, which, like most other works, have only survived as manuscripts.
