Alex Fabián Varas Rubio or Alex Varas for short (born March 26, 1976 in Santiago de Chile ) is a Chilean football player .

Career

society

The goalkeeper began his career in 1995 at CD Universidad Católica . He immediately won the Copa Chile with CDUC . In the final, CD Cobreloa was beaten 4-2. However, Varas was not used. The following season, the goalkeeper moved to league rivals Coquimbo Unido , but then returned to Universidad, where he was able to win the 1997 Apertura championship . In 2000, Varas transferred to Audax Italiano before signing with the Santiago Wanderers in 2001 . With these, the goalkeeper won the Chilean overall championship in 2001 . After four seasons, Varas returned to Audax and was signed by the Chilean record champions CSD Colo-Colo in 2005 . With Colo-Colo, Varas won the Apertura and Clausura in 2006. In 2007 he finally moved to CD Universidad de Concepción , after a year Varas moved again to the Santiago Wanderers before ending his career.

National team

Varas made his first appearance for his country's national team on March 29, 1995 against Mexico. At that time, the former national coach Xabier Azkargorta Varas started his team. The game ended 2-1 for Chile. Since then, he has made seven international appearances, including two at the 2004 Copa America in Peru . The goalkeeper made his Copa debut on July 9, 2004 against the team from Brazil , which Chile lost 1-0. As the last in Group C, Vara's team was eliminated after the preliminary round. For the 2006 World Cup qualification he was next to Claudio Bravo in the squad of the national team.
