Alexa and Katie is an American sitcom broadcast by the video-on-demand provider Netflix . It is the platform's first multi-camera production . The first season, consisting of 13 episodes, premiered on March 23, 2018. On April 10, 2018, Netflix extended the series by another season, which consists of ten episodes and has been available since December 26, 2018. On February 15, 2019, Netflix announced that it had ordered a third season. This will consist of a total of 16 episodes, but they have been split up. The first eight episodes were published on December 30, 2019, the remaining eight and thus the last of the series premiered on June 13, 2020.

The teenager Alexa Mendoza is diagnosed with leukemia . After her doctor allows her to go to school, she and best friend Katie Cooper prepare for her first day of high school . However, Alexa's hair is falling out due to chemotherapy , which she is ashamed of. She decides to keep the illness a secret from her classmates for the time being, as she does not want to receive any pity from them, especially her rival Gwenny. The two students also have to cope with problems many young people have, such as first love or bad grades.
In addition to everyday school life, the private life of the two girls is also dealt with: Dave and Lori, Alexa's parents, initially have difficulties dealing with their daughter's illness, especially her father, while Lori is overprotective of her and often lets her get away with too much. which often gets Alexa into trouble. Her older brother Lucas sometimes looks simple-minded and likes to tease his sister, but he actually has a good heart and wants to become a doctor to help other people.
Katie's mother, Jennifer, who is single and divorced, is catching up with her college degree as the family is often short of money. She is good friends with Lori and Dave and shares a passion for football with Katie's younger brother Jack . Jack is still young, but understands that Alexa's illness is very stressful for her, which is why he often wants to support her.

After Alexa Mendoza's doctor approves her school attendance after a long period of cancer treatment, she and her best friend Katie Cooper are looking forward to the first day of high school . At home, however, she realizes that she is losing hair due to her ongoing chemotherapy , which she takes note of in a state of dissolution. Later she and Katie throw toilet paper at the house of her rival Gwenny, but her school principal Trugly lives in the house. They are suspended for three days, Katie reacts furiously when she learns that Alexa knew who the house belongs to. When Katie finds hair in the ski hat she borrowed to Alexa, she understands why her friend wanted to be suspended. In the Internet Movie Database, Alexa and Katie received an average rating of 7.3 stars based on 2,253 reviews. On Rotten Tomatoes , the first season received a rating of 82 percent from users and 100 percent from critics. The second season received a rating of 92 percent from viewers, the third season 91 percent (as of June 13, 2019).
Hanh Nguyen of IndieWire wrote, “It's thanks to the charismatic and peppy ensemble that these storylines work out, especially because the series is incredibly silly, sometimes too silly. Fortunately, the cast has the will and comedic talent to deal with a subject like this without making it seem forced. [...] Alexa and Katie may not be a critic's favorite because of their youthful tone, but it's an important show as it tries to carefully approach a serious subject. "
