history

Onion domes of the cathedral

The Nevsky Cathedral was built between 1894/1895 and 1900 as the Russian Orthodox Cathedral of Mikhail Preobrazhensky in the then government of Estonia of the Russian Empire Built. A Luther monument was originally planned at the Toompea site , but the Russian authorities have forbidden its erection. The consecration of the cathedral took place on April 30, 1900. The construction cost just under 600,000 rubles, about 430,000 were donated and 150,000 rubles were paid by the state.

During Estonia's independence, the cathedral, seen as a symbol of Russification , was due to be demolished in 1924. In 1941, during the Second World War , the German conquerors closed the cathedral. It was completely restored at the end of the 20th century. Parts of the services are held in Estonian.

The cathedral is richly decorated and has eleven bells cast in Saint Petersburg , the largest of which weighs around 16 tons, more than the other ten combined. It has three altars, the northern altar is dedicated to Vladimir I (the saint), the southern one to Saint Sergius of Radonezh .

The base of the building is made of Finnish granite. Gilded iron crosses can be seen on the five onion domes. Inside there are three gold-plated iconostases carved from wood . There are also four icon boxes. The icons of the iconostases and icon boxes were painted on copper and zinc plates in St. Petersburg .
