Alexander Alexandrovich Vasiliev
Alexander Vasiliev (originally Russian Александр Александрович Васильев / Alexander Alexandrovich Vasilyev , scientific. Transliteration Aleksandr Aleksandrovich Vasil'ev ; born September 22 . Jul / 4. October 1870 greg. In Saint Petersburg , † the 30th March 1953 in Washington, DC ) was one of the most important Byzantinists of the 1st half of the 20th century.
Vasiliev studied Byzantine Studies with Vasily Wassilewski and Arabic at the University of Saint Petersburg . From 1892 to 1897 he worked as a high school teacher. From 1897 to 1900 he studied in Paris and received his doctorate in St. Petersburg in 1901. In 1902 he accompanied Nikolai Marr on a research trip to St. Catherine's Monastery at the foot of the Sinai . From 1904 to 1912 he taught at Jurjew University . From 1912 to 1922 he taught at the St. Petersburg Pedagogical Academy, from 1917 to 1925 at the University of St. Petersburg, from 1919 he was a member of the Russian Academy of Sciences . During a visit to Paris in 1925 Michael Rostovtzeff convinced him to emigrate. This also gave him a professorship at the University of Wisconsin – Madison . After his retirement in 1938, Vasiliev worked in Dumbarton Oaks from 1944 .
Two of his works, his investigations into the relationship between Byzantines and Arabs and his history of the Byzantine Empire , are still among the standard works on Byzantine history.
