Alexandru Caraman ( Romanian Alexandru Akimovici Caraman , Russian Александр Акимович Караман , * 26. July 1956 in Tschobrutschi , slobozia district , Moldavian SSR ) is a Transdniestrian doctor and politician . He was the first vice-president of Transnistria.

biography

He graduated from the Chișinău Medical School in 1978. Until 1980 he worked as an intern in a hospital in Chișinău. Until 1982 he worked as a nursing teacher in Tiraspol . In 1982 he was appointed a delegate of Slobodseja Raion for the 17th Congress of the Communist Party of the MSSR . From 1982 to 1985 he served in the Soviet Army . Among other things, he worked as a surgeon in a military hospital in Abakan .

As deputy chairman of the Provisional Supreme Council of the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic, Karaman was involved in the country's declaration of independence on September 2, 1990. In the 1991 Transnistrian presidential election he was appointed vice president of the country. He held this office until 2001.

On March 22, 2002, Karaman was appointed prerogative Ambassador of Transnistria for the Russian Federation and the Republic of Belarus by decree of the Transnistrian President .

In the wake of the crisis in Ukraine in 2014 , Karaman was briefly appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic on August 16 as successor to Yekaterina Gubareva .

On May 30, 2015, the Public Prosecutor of the Donetsk People's Republic initiated criminal proceedings against Karaman for kidnapping. To escape this, Karaman had to flee to Russia, where he has previously taught at the Institute for Constitutional and International Law of the Belgorod University of Cooperation, Economics and Law.

Because of the Ukraine crisis, Karaman has been on the EU sanctions list since September 2014 . The US also put him on its sanctions list in March 2015.
