Alexander Castell (born November 21, 1883 in Kurzrickenbach as Heinrich Wilhelm Lang ; † February 21, 1939 in Kreuzlingen ) was a Swiss writer .

life and work

Alexander Castell was the oldest child of the painter Jakob Wilhelm Lang and Franziska Carolina née Engeler. From 1899 to 1904 he attended the canton school in Frauenfeld and got to know Alfred Huggenberger during this time . In the winter semester of 1904/1905 Castell began to study theology at the University of Zurich , then switched to philosophy and art history and attended lectures at the universities of Munich , Berlin and Paris (Sorbonne).

After 1908, Castell devoted himself exclusively to writing and his stories were included in respected literary magazines. In 1910 his first book of short stories was published, The Strange Battle . His first novel, Bernards Temptation , was published in 1911 and 1913 by the band Capriccio with sixteen novellettes - all by Albert Langen's publishing house in Munich.

Since 1913 the author has been using his previous pseudonym «Alexander Castell» as a real name. In the years after 1910, Paris increasingly became Castell's second home. There he met many cultural workers of his time and made friends with them.

Castell was the only Swiss person to be present when the Versailles Peace Treaty was signed in 1919 . In the same year his book French Travel was published , in which he processed his impressions as a war correspondent on the British front.

In 1933 Castell returned to Kreuzlingen due to financial difficulties. His refusal to join a National Socialist writers' association was followed by the ban on his 1931 novel Danger at seventeen . So Castell turned to film and sent his novel to various producers, wrote scripts and looked for sponsors and suitable actors.

Alexander Castell died of heart failure in 1939 at the age of 55. His estate is in the Thurgau State Archives .
