Alexander Donnet, Baron Donnet of Balgay

Alexander Mitchell Donnet Donnet Baron of Balgay, CBE (* 6. June 1916 , † 14. May 1985 ) was a British trade union functionary , the 1970-1976 chairman of the Union of General and Municipal Workers ( National Union of General and Municipal Workers was) and in 1978 when Life Peer became a member of the House of Lords under the Life Peerages Act 1958 .

Life

In 1959 Donnet became Regional Secretary of the National Union of General and Municipal Workers (NUGMW) of Scotland and held that position for more than 25 years until his death.

In 1970 he became chairman of the National Union of General and Municipal Workers and held this position until 1976. As such, he was also President of the governing body of trade unions in Scotland, the Scottish Trades Union Congress (STUC) from 1971 to 1972 . In addition, he had also been active at the national level in the umbrella organization of the British trade unions, the Trades Union Congress (TUC), from the beginning of the 1970s , and was a member of its General Council between 1972 and 1976.

In addition to his union work, he was appointed on October 1, 1973 for a three-year term until September 30, 1976 under the Forestry Act 1967 by the Ministry of the Interior to the honorary Forestry Commissioner . For his many years of service, he was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) on January 1, 1975 . On October 1, 1976, he was appointed Forestry Commissioner for a further two-year period ending September 30, 1978.

By a letters patent dated May 19, 1978, Donnet was raised to the nobility under the Life Peerages Act 1958 as a life peer with the title Baron Donnet of Balgay , of Balgay in the District of the City of Dundee, and belonged to the nobility until his death House of Lords as a member. Its official launch ( House of Lords ) on 24 May 1978 supported by Jack Cooper, Baron Cooper of Stockton Heath and John Smith, Baron Kirkhill .
