Alexander Julius Paul Dorn (born June 8, 1833 in Riga , † November 27, 1901 in Berlin ) was a German composer, choir conductor and music teacher.

Life

Alexander Dorn was a son of the better known composer Heinrich Dorn and brother of Otto Dorn . He was trained by his father. He then became a private music teacher in Poland, but had to relocate to Egypt for health reasons, where he worked as a conductor of German men's choirs in Cairo and later in Alexandria . From 1865 he was the conductor of the Liedertafel in Krefeld . In 1869 he became a piano teacher at the Berlin Music Academy .

He left behind numerous, mostly forgotten works, including a number of etudes and easier pieces for piano students, but also piano concertos (unprinted), works for piano, operettas for female voices, 3 masses for male choir and orchestra, the choral work “Der Blumen Rache” for solos , Choir and orchestra as well as some songs.

Alexander Dorn died in Berlin in 1901 at the age of 68. He was buried in the local cemetery II of the Jerusalem and New Churches in front of the Hallesches Tor . The grave has not been preserved.

  • Two easy performance pieces for violin with piano accompaniment, Op. 136 (ca.1890).
