South of Washington Bridge with access ramps |
The Alexander Hamilton Bridge is a road bridge in New York City that connects Manhattan to the Bronx across the Harlem River . It is named after Alexander Hamilton , one of the founding fathers of the United States , and opened on January 15, 1963.
traffic
The bridge is part of the major north-south route through New York City, which is formed from Interstate 95 and US Highway 1 . It connects the Trans-Manhattan Expressway with the Cross Bronx Expressway . From the along leading on the western shore of the river Harlem River Drive and located on the east side Interstate 87 lead ramps to 30 meters overlying bridge, which because of its almost circular shape commonly known as Corkscrew (engl. For " corkscrews are designated").
The Alexander Hamilton Bridge is considered to be the busiest of all bridges over the Harlem River. Known for its notorious traffic jams, it was ranked 25th on the list of the worst traffic incidents in the United States in 2017.
history
The bridge was built to relieve the Washington Bridge . This became necessary after the second lower level of the George Washington Bridge opened in 1962. 90% of the construction costs were taken over by the federal government because the bridge is part of the trunk road network.
Construction of the Alexander Hamilton Bridge began in 1960. The steel arches were completed in spring 1962 and the opening took place in January 1963. The ramps to the streets below were not completed until 1964.
The structure is 724 meters long with the ramps. The main bridge consists of two 169-meter-long riveted steel arches lying next to each other, each supporting four lanes and one hard shoulder. Their span is 112 meters.
Between 2009 and 2013, the bridge was renovated for $ 407 million. At the time, the contract was the largest single contract awarded by NYSDOT , New York's road infrastructure authority . It was carried out by China Construction America , a subsidiary of the state-owned Chinese construction company China State Construction Engineering (CSCEC), in a joint venture with Halmar International .
