The Cross Bronx Expressway ( German literally Bronx-Quer-Schnellstraße ) is the name for a 6.5 mile (10.46 km) long section of freeway within New York City , which runs in a west-east direction through the southern Bronx . It was opened in several stages between 1955 and 1963.

The freeway begins at the Alexander Hamilton Bridge over the Harlem River , then runs east at about 175th Street to the Bronx River and then south-southeast to the Hutchinson River , where it meets the Bruckner Expressway . It then continues in a south-easterly direction through Throgs Neck and meets the Throgs Neck Expressway at the foot of the Throgs Neck Bridge .

The Cross Bronx Expressway is a very important road link in the New York area. Between the Harlem River and the Hutchinson River, it is part of Interstate 95 , the most important north-south road link on the east coast; at the same time it is part of the freeway connection from Queens and Long Island to New Jersey , bypassing Manhattan . The traffic load is correspondingly very high.

The construction and especially the route of the motorway has always been considered controversial. According to critics, little consideration was given to the social structures of the affected residential areas in the planning. In fact, in many places the motorway does not run between the individual urban districts that have evolved, but right through them and not aligned with the existing road network. Since the decline of the southern Bronx accelerated noticeably, especially after the completion of the expressway, its existence is made partly responsible for this phenomenon.
