Alexander Heinrich Neus

Alexander Heinrich Neus ( Russian Александр Генрих Нейс ; * December 16 jul. / December 27,  1795 greg. In Reval ; † February 10 jul. / February 22,  1876 greg. Ibid) was a Baltic German folklorist , translator and publicist .

life and work

Alexander Heinrich Neus studied theology at the University of Dorpat until 1817 . He then worked as a tutor. From 1821 to 1841 he was inspector of the district school of Hapsal . Neus was one of the founders of the Estonian Literary Society in 1842 and one of its most active members.

Neus was frequently published in the important Baltic German newspapers and magazines such as the Dorpater Jahrbücher , Das Inland and the articles on the precise knowledge of the Estonian language . His subjects were mainly Estonian folk poetry and its translation into German, as well as Estonian mythology . He published the first anthology of Estonian folk poetry under the title Estonian Folk Songs. Original and translation in three books (1850–52). They came mainly from the folklore collections of Johann Heinrich Rosenplänter , Gustav Heinrich Schüdlöffel , Friedrich Nikolai Russow , Arnold Friedrich Johann Knüpffer and Friedrich Reinhold Kreutzwald . With Kreutzwald Neus published the collection Mythical and Magical Songs of Ehsten in 1854 .

Alexander Heinrich Neus died at an old age in Reval. He was buried in the Kopli ( Estonian Kopli kalmistu ) cemetery. His grave - like the entire cemetery - was completely destroyed by the Red Army after the Soviet occupation of Estonia .
