Alexander Herman Schutz (born March 27, 1894 in Chicago , † 1964 ) was an American Romanist , Provençalist and Medievalist .

life and work

Schutz was the son of a father of Jewish origin who immigrated to the United States from East Prussia and a Romanian mother who spoke French with him. He studied in Chicago with Thomas Atkinson Jenkins and Karl Pietsch . He was an Instructor for French at the University of Mississippi from 1915 to 1917 . After his military service he studied in France in 1919 with Georges Millardet and Alfred Jeanroy . In 1920 he obtained his master's degree in Chicago with the work Fifty dialect words in the novels of George Sand , and in 1922 he received his doctorate there with the work The peasant vocabulary in the works of George Sand (Columbia 1927). In the same year he went to the Iowa State Teachers College (now the University of Northern Iowa ) in Cedar Falls (Iowa) and in 1923 to the University of Missouri in Columbia (Missouri) . There he met Urban Tigner Holmes, Jr. , with whom he had a lifelong friendship. From 1927 he taught at Ohio State University in Columbus (Ohio) (from 1933 as Associate Professor, from 1938 as Full Professor).

Schutz had been married to Deborah Libauer since 1929. She died on August 19, 2002 at the age of 99 in Spartanburg , South Carolina.
