Alexander Julius Klünder ( Russian Александр Иванович Клюндер or Клиндер; born February 8 . Jul / 20th February  1802 greg. In Tallinn , Governorate of Estonia , † December 27, 1874 jul. / 8. January  1875 greg. ) Was an Estonian Painter and lithographer . He was best known for his portraits .

life and work

Alexander Julius Klünder was born as the son of master tailor Johann Joachim Klünder and Sophia Elisabeth Ripke in the Estonian capital Reval (Estonian Tallinn ). He first attended the district school, then from 1818 to 1823 the Gouvernements-Gymnasium .

From 1823 to 1826 Klünder studied economics at the University of Tartu (then Imperial University of Dorpat ). At the same time he took lessons at the famous Tartu drawing school of the copper engraver Karl August Senff . Klünder's famous portrait of the Estonian philologist and physician Friedrich Robert Faehlmann was created at that time . After completing his studies, Klünder returned to Tallinn as a freelance artist and drawing teacher.

On the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the reopening of the University of Tartu, Klünder created thirty portraits of well-known Tartu professors between 1827 and 1829.

He probably moved to the Russian capital Saint Petersburg in 1829 to settle down as a portraitist. Klünder was successful. In 1834 he was awarded the title of "free artist" (for miniature painting). In 1839 he was named " Agrégé ". In July 1841 he became a member of the Imperial Art Academy .

In 1839 Klünder was awarded an honorary prize for the portraits of six members of the Tsarist hussar regiment. He portrayed members of the Russian tsarist family and members of the upper class, as well as well-known artists such as the poet Mikhail Lermontow and the painter Karl Brjullow . Pushkin was one of his circle of friends .

Alexander Julius Klünder spent the years before his death in his hometown of Tallinn.

Private life

Alexander Julius Klünder married Emilie Printz in Tallinn in October 1858.
