Assessment of the consequences of the Chernobyl accident
In 1986 Kaul advised the Federal Government in his function as director of the Institute for Radiation Hygiene on the consequences of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster for the Federal Republic of Germany. In 2011 he stated in an interview that the GAU at the time had not caused any health consequences . The radiation biologist Edmund Lengfelder criticized Kaul's recommendations at the time as inadequate and also contradicted his statement that there were no secondary diseases. According to his research, the increased number of thyroid cancer patients , for example , is solely due to the reactor accident.
