The Cloud - Chernobyl and the Consequences is a German documentary that was produced in 2010 for Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk and was to be shown for the first time on April 26, 2011 on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the Chernobyl disaster . Due to the nuclear disaster in Fukushima after the severe Tōhoku earthquake in Japan just a few weeks earlier on March 11, 2011, the work was already a day later on March 12, 2011 at prime time on Saturday evening as a 45-minute short version in the program Das Erste taken by ARD . It was then broadcast in full on March 16, 2011 on Arte and again on Arte and on MDR television on March 19 , also changing the planned programs . It had only been completed two weeks before it first aired. In 2012 the film was nominated for the Grimme Prize .

content

The film shows "in constant alternation between archive recordings and current - sometimes remorseful - interviews with protagonists of the time, how the risk of radiation in the Federal Republic was largely downplayed, hushed up in the GDR and even made ridiculous for weeks in France." Archive recordings show, for example, the then Federal Minister of the Interior Friedrich Zimmermann , Federal Minister for Special Tasks and Head of the Federal Chancellery Wolfgang Schäuble , Rita Süssmuth , 1986 Federal Minister of Health , and Joschka Fischer , then Environment Minister in Hesse and first Green Minister in Germany. Süssmuth and Fischer have their say again in current interviews, as well as other personalities from business, science or sport, such as Klaus Knizia , Klaus Kocks , Edmund Lengfelder , Alexander Kaul , Sebastian Pflugbeil and Olaf Ludwig .

In addition to prominent people, largely unknown contemporary witnesses were interviewed, such as Cornelia Stadler from the organization Mütter gegen Atomkraft ( Mothers Against Nuclear Power), which was established in the old FRG , or Otto Zöllner, who was the only survivor of a GDR labor column who had to clean contaminated trucks that had been rejected at the inner-German border before they crossed the border , as well as a mother from Berlin who became pregnant shortly before the accident and then gave birth to a disabled child. Finally, a biologist and a physicist from France and a doctor from Corsica have their say several times during the interviews.

criticism

“Actually, the 90-minute film Die Wolke is a classic anniversary film, planned for the anniversary of the Chernobyl disaster on April 26, 1986. And yet, created by the also through careful cinema work ('After that it should have been nice') well-known documentarist, nothing of a compulsory exercise. (...) The film gives some space to the former statesman Joschka Fischer, who looks back in a highly entertaining way (...) But it also shows - and that gives substance to the research - the last survivors of the highly radiation-contaminated VEB column, which at the time in Mühlhausen, Thuringia ' without protective clothing, with a water hose and a brush, 'had to wash those trucks off before heading west again.
