Alexander Marx

Alexander Marx (born January 29, 1878 in Elberfeld (now part of Wuppertal ), † December 1953 in New York City ) was an American historian, Judaist, bibliographer and librarian.

His parents were the merchant and banker George Marx and the poet Gertrud, b. Simon (1851-1916). His brother Moses became a publisher and printer in Berlin and his sister married Samuel Agnon .

From 1886 to 1895 he attended the Kneiphöfische Stadtgymnasium in Königsberg. He studied at the rabbinical seminary in Berlin with Jakob Barth , Abraham Berliner and David Hoffmann , obtained his PhD in 1901 and continued his education with Moritz Steinschneider . In 1905 he married Hannah, the daughter of Rector David Hoffmann.

In 1903 he was appointed by Solomon Schechter to the Jewish Theological Seminary in New York City as a librarian and teacher of history. He expanded the book inventory from 5000 to 155,000 books.

He was friends with Aron Freimann .
