Alexandre Glais-Bizoin (born March 9, 1800 in Quintin , Côtes-du-Nord , † November 6, 1877 in Lamballe , Côtes-du-Nord) was a French politician .

Life

As a staunch opponent of the Restoration , the extreme left elected Glais-Bizoin as their representative in parliament after the July Revolution of 1830 . As such, he tried to prevent the July monarchy and also the first signatory of Odilon Barrot's indictment , which he stood against François Pierre Guillaume Guizot .

After the February Revolution in 1848 , Glais-Bizoin became a member of the government and, as chairman of the Democratic Association in the Palais Royal , he allied himself several times with the Mountain Party to promote the policies of Napoléon III. to prevent. When his political career fell short of his expectations, he gave up almost all offices and retired into private life.

In 1863 Glais-Bizoin was re-elected to the Chamber of Deputies , where he joined the opposition, but hardly made a name for himself there. When the Franco-Prussian War began, Glais-Bizoin was brought into the government of national defense with effect from September 4, 1870 . As a member of the delegation for the administration of the provinces , Glais-Bizoin went to Tours under the direction of lawyer Adolphe Crémieux to organize a new cabinet there from October under the leadership of Léon Gambetta .

After the uprising of the Paris Commune on March 18, 1871, Glais-Bizoin was arrested on May 13 of the same year and placed under house arrest. His release came under the promise to stay in Paris. He was only able to save himself to Versailles when the government troops marched in. In the by-elections four weeks later, Glais-Bizoin could be re-elected, but could no longer build on its earlier successes.

He now finally withdrew from the political stage and settled in Lamballe. There he died at the age of 77 on November 6, 1877.
