society

Alex began his professional career in 1998 at the lower-class Portuguese club AD Fafe . After three years, the wing defender moved to Moreirense FC , with whom he won the Liga de Honra , the second Portuguese division, in 2001/02 and was promoted to the Primeira Liga . For the 2002/03 season Alex made his first division debut and convinced with good performances. With his club he also managed to stay up. In the meantime, however, the Portuguese top teams became aware of the defensive player and so Benfica Lisbon secured the services of the defender in the summer of 2003. Alex was runner-up with Benfica and won the Taça de Portugal , the national cup. However, he did not manage to prevail and was awarded the following year to league rival Vitória Guimarães . At VSP , Alex rose to become a regular. The German club VfL Wolfsburg noticed this, so that after Alex returned to Lisbon they negotiated a transfer with the Benfica officials. The defender moved from Benfica Lisbon to Wolves for around 1.8 million euros in the 2005/06 season . In the first year he was used 17 times in the Bundesliga with the Wolves. The Portuguese made his Bundesliga debut on matchday 3, August 27, 2005, against Bayer 04 Leverkusen . The green and white narrowly secured the league. In the two following years, however, there were only four missions left. With the beginning of the 2008/09 season he was no longer part of the squad after he was sorted out by Felix Magath . In the summer of 2009, Alex returned to his former club Vitória Guimarães.

National team

Alex played three times for the Portuguese national team. The defensive player made his debut for Portugal on June 4, 2005 in the World Cup qualifier against Slovakia . He played his last game shortly afterwards, on August 17, 2005, in a friendly against Egypt . In the 2-0 victory he was in the starting line-up of the selection. In all three international matches for Portugal, Alex was always in the star formation and was never replaced. The national selection won each of the three encounters with the defender.
