Alexandrina belongs to the Outer Adelaide region and borders the metropolis of Adelaide in the northwest . The area includes 55 hamlets and villages: Angas Plains, Ashbourne, Belvidere, Blackfellows Creek, Bletchley, Bull Creek, Callington, Clayton, Currency Creek, Dingabledinga, Finniss, Gemmells, Goolwa, Goolwa Beach, Goolwa North, Goolwa South, Hartley, Hayborough , Highland Valley, Hindmarsh Island, Hope Forest, Kuitpo, Kuitpo Colony, Kyeema, Lake Plains, Langhorne Creek, Macclesfield, McHarg Creek, Middleton, Milang, Montarra, Mosquito Hill, Mount Compass, Mount Jagged, Mount Magnificent, Mount Observation, Mundoo Island, Nangkita, Nurragi, Pages Flat, Paris Creek, Point Sturt, Port Elliot, Prospect Hill, Red Creek, Salem, Sandergrove, Strathalbyn, The Range, Tolderol, Tooperang, Willunga Hill, Wistow, Woodchester and Yundi. The administrative headquarters of the council is in Goolwa in the south of the LGA, where about 7700 inhabitants live (2016).

The LGA is northwest of the confluence of the Murray River , Australia's longest river, in the Southern Ocean in Encounter Bay . Before that, the river forms a large lake, Lake Alexandrina , with Goolwa on its foothills. In the middle of the 19th century the city was an important port for river trade. Since the Murray estuary is blocked by sandbanks at low tide and is otherwise dangerous waters, the merchandise was brought from Goolwa to Port Elliot for loading onto ocean-going vessels. In 1854 one of the first two railway lines in all of Australia was opened for this purpose. The Cockle Train , a historic steam train, still runs on this route to Victor Harbor today . Later, Milang took on the role of the main river port, the goods were brought across the street to the new center of Adelaide. However, when the Murray Bridge , located further upstream, was later connected to Adelaide by rail, the region's importance for trade declined.

Today the coastal region at Encounter Bay is a popular tourist region. In the southeast of the LGA is the mouth of the Murray River , where the Coorong National Park , which extends along the coast, begins. There are several popular surfing beaches at Port Elliott and Middleton. Milang and Clayton offer water sports on Lake Alexandrina. Goolwa is the starting point for Murray river trips and the location of a hundred year old paddle steamer. In the city, which is also known for its boat building, the Wooden Boat Festival takes place every two years. Goolwa decided on a cautious and cautious urban development in response to the rapid change in the coastal area through tourism and influx, which is known as Seachange , and was the first city outside Europe to join the Cittàslow movement.

The inland of the council is mainly used for agriculture and forestry. Wine is grown in the area around Currency Creek and Langhorne Creek. The coastal and river regions also live from fishing. A specialty is the Australian sea shell known in South Australia as Goolwa cockle (Plebidonax deltoides).
