Alexandru Graur

Alexandru Graur (born July 9, 1900 in Botoșani , † July 9, 1988 in Bucharest ) was a Romanian linguist, Latinist, Romanist and Romanist .

life and work

Graur studied in Bucharest and from 1924 in Paris. He completed his habilitation at the Sorbonne with the two theses Les Consonnes géminées en latin (Paris 1929) and Nom d'agent et adjectif en roumain (Paris 1929). In the thirties he worked as a high school teacher in Bucharest. From 1941 to 1944 he directed the private Jewish high school he founded (in response to anti-Semitism). From 1946 to 1964 he held the chair of Classical Philology at the University of Bucharest (from 1954 to 1956 he was also dean), from 1964 to his retirement in 1970, the chair of General Linguistics.

From 1955 Graur was a full member of the Romanian Academy . From 1955 to 1974 he headed their publishing house. From 1974 until his death he was chairman of their philological department. He was the editor-in-chief of the magazines Studii clasice (1959–1988), Limba şi literatura (1965–1970) and Limba română (1982–1988).
