Alexei Vasilievich Pogorelov ( Russian Алексей Васильевич Погорелов , Ukrainian Олексій Васильович Погорєлов / Oleksiy Wassylowytsch Pohorjelow ; * 2. March 1919 in Korocha , Belgorod Oblast ; † 17th December 2002 in Moscow ) was a Soviet mathematician of Russian origin, who worked on geometry.

Live and act

From 1937 to 1941 he studied at the University of Kharkiv and then until 1945 at the Zhukovsky Academy of the Air Force in Moscow. After the war he studied further in Moscow with Nikolai Efimov and Alexander Danilowitsch Alexandrow . In 1947 he completed his habilitation in Moscow and returned to Kharkiv University, where he was given the chair of geometry. From 1960 he was at the Institute for Low Temperature Physics in Kharkiv as head of the geometry department in the mathematics department.

Pogorelow was mainly concerned with geometry, for example the geometry of convex bodies, geometric theory of the Monge-Ampere equations and Hilbert's 4th problem (and brought the related theory to a certain conclusion), but also with applied mathematics (such as the theory thinner Shells in statics, which he also checked in experiments) and even as an engineer with refrigeration technology (cryo-turbo generators). In addition to monographs, he also wrote a geometry school textbook widely used in Russia (1972). Pogorelow proved the regularity of convex surfaces if the metric is regular and the Gaussian curvature is positive.

In 1950 he received the Stalin Prize (State Prize), the Lenin Prize in 1962 and the Lobachevsky Medal in 1959 . He was a member of the Soviet Academy of Sciences (corresponding member since 1960, full member since 1976) and the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences (corresponding member since 1951, full member since 1960).
