Alexis Bosch

Alexis Bosch Mendez (born June 18, 1966 in Havana ) is a Cuban jazz musician ( piano , composition , arrangement , also percussion ) who combines elements of American and Latin American jazz with various currents of Cuban music and international pop and rock music .

Bosch trained as a drummer at school, but also learned the piano because his maternal grandmother was a piano teacher. In 1985 he completed his studies at the Amadeo Roldan Conservatory. In addition to his work as a musician, he completed his studies as a conductor of popular music in 1991.

In 1985 Bosch worked at the Orquesta Ideal in Guantánamo, first as a drummer, then as a pianist and arranger; there he dealt in particular with the Changüi music. Then he replaced Felipe Dulzaides in the jazz quartet Fusion 4 . He performed with bands like System, Glass and Cut (Sarabande) . He studied Afro-Jazz with Martha Duarte and Bobby Carcassés . He also worked as a sideman in Óscar Valdés ' Diákara .

In 1987 he became professor of drums at the Alejandro García Caturla music school in Havana. There he became a pianist in various groups, including Runway and the Sendas quintet , where he performed with Emiliano Salvador Valdés, Rodolfo Terry, Jose Feliciano Arango, Carlos Acosta and Barretico. He wrote and arranged for the band in particular at Sendas . In 2008 Bosch released his debut album Round Tumbao with his quintet . He has also shared the stage with greats like Tito Puente , Waldo Madera, flautist Dave Valentin , Giovanni Hidalgo , Ray Charles , Compay Segundo , Eddie Palmieri , Gonzalo Rubalcaba , Sexto Sentido and Chucho Valdés . He also recorded two albums with César López and the Habana Ensemble . Arturo O'Farrill brought him to his album Cuba: The Conversation Continues (2015), to which he contributed several pieces as a composer and performer. He toured North America, Europe, Argentina, Brazil, Peru and Venezuela.

As a composer, Bosch wrote more than 80 works in the field of jazz, but also chamber music . He is also the author of didactic pieces for elementary level drum ensembles, which are used in various Havana music schools.

The records Amor y Piano and Clásicos de Cuba , in which Bosch was involved, were both awarded the Cubadisco Prize (2004 and 2008, respectively).
