Alexis Georgoulis , Greek Αλέξης Γεωργούλης (born October 6, 1974 in Larissa ) is a Greek actor, film director and politician ( SYRIZA ), who is best known for his role in the Greek series Eisai To Tairi Mou ( Greek Είσαι το Ταίρι μου ) . He made his first international film appearance in My Big Fat Greek Summer . Georgoulis has been a member of the European Parliament as part of the Confederal Group of the European United Left / Nordic Green Left since the 2019 European elections .

Life

Youth and education

Georgoulis was born the third of five children. His mother worked as a teacher and his father sold lottery tickets.

In 1993 Georgoulis began studying civil engineering at the National Technical University of Athens . In 1996 he took acting courses at the Greek drama schools “Stage-Craft” and “Theater of Changes”. In 1997 he completed a course at the “Lasmos” school, founded by the well-known Greek actor Vasilis Diamantopoulos , with excellent results .

Acting career

In 1997 Georgoulis first appeared with the dance group "Herois" in the piece Carmen 33 (1997) and in The Return (1998). He also had roles in the television series Alice in Wonderland (1997) and in Death Agony (1998) as well as in the short film No one's Rose . In 2001, Georgoulis took on a role in the Greek sitcom Eisai To Tairi Mou on Mega Channel. The series had great success in the Greek market, so that Georgoulis achieved great fame. Nevertheless, Georgoulis remained loyal to the theater: in 2003 he directed the play "Viel Glück" at the National Theater. In 2004 he was the director of the comedy "The Form of Things" by Neil Labute at the Kivotos Theater.

Later became Georgoulis outside Greece to fame: In 2009, he took on a role in the romantic comedy My Life in Ruins by Donald Petrie with Richard Dreyfuss . In 2016 he took on one of the leading roles in the British television series The Durrells .

In March 2019 Georgoulis announced that the Greek party SYRIZA would be running in the 2019 European elections. The party nominated him for fifth place on the list. His party won 23.7 percent in the elections, 6 of the 21 Greek seats. Georgoulis thus moved in directly and joined the Confederal Group of the European United Left / Nordic Green Left together with his party colleagues . Georgoulis is a member of the Committee on Culture and Education and a deputy member of the Petitions Committee for the parliamentary group .
