Alexius Fountain

The Alexius Fountain , also known as the earthquake fountain , in Rastatt , Baden-Württemberg, is the northernmost of two baroque fountains on the market square between the St. Alexander Church and the town hall . The second fountain to the south is the Johannes Nepomuk fountain .

history

After Rastatt was struck by earthquakes in 1723 and 1728, the population sought protection in intercessions and invoked the patron saint Alexius von Edessa , the patron saint against earthquakes , lightning and storms . For this reason, the margraves Ludwig Georg Simpert and his brother August Georg Simpert commissioned the construction of a fountain in honor of the saint in 1737 . The fountain was built in front of the Rastatt town hall according to plans by the margrave builder Johann Peter Ernst Rohrer and completed in 1739. The fountain is older than the church built in the immediate vicinity in 1756, which was also designed by master builder Johann Peter Ernst Rohrer.

An inscription shows that the fountain only received water under Margrave August Georg Simpert.

Inscriptions

He bears a recent plaque with the following inscription:

"Monomental well built by Margrave Ludwig Georg and his brother August Georg in 1739 by the lordly master builder M. E. Rohrer in honor of St. Alexius as the city's protector against the risk of earthquakes."

On the fountain itself is written in Latin script:

"For Lord and Saint Alexius, the margraviate of Baden, the holiest patron saint against the danger of the earthquake, Ludwig Georg, Margrave of Baden and Hochberg Landgrave of Sausenberg, Knight of the Golden Fleece, had this work erected for Saint Alexius so that he and his family would be protected from the scourge of Earthquake protected. August Georg let the water flow (in the fountain) in 1770 (whose) brother regent Ludwig Georg built the plant "
