Alfréd Radok (born December 17, 1914 in Koloděje , Bohemia , † April 22, 1976 in Vienna ) was a Czech theater and film director.

Life

Radok came from a Jewish family from the South Bohemian village of Koloděje. He initially worked as a theater director and from 1947 also for film. His debut film Daleká cesta was the first and for several years the only Czech film that dealt with the persecution of the Jews by the National Socialists. However, the film was withdrawn from circulation by the state film censorship. Radok also influenced other filmmakers with his next film, Divotvorný klobouk . His employees included u. a. Miloš Forman . After Radok's other films were also banned, he only worked for the theater. His avant-garde theater Laterna magika , founded in 1958, celebrated international success. In 1968 Radok emigrated to Sweden .

"His influence on Czech cinema was far greater than the number of his films suggests: Almost solely with his experiments in the period of socialist realism, he inspired the new generation to go further and to experiment with content and form."
