Alfred Ammelburg
Heinrich Alfred Ammelburg (born August 21, 1864 in Bornheim , † June 29, 1939 in Neuhaus (Schliersee) ) was a German chemist and manager.
Life
He was the son of the merchant Johann Jacob Ammelburg. After attending secondary school, Alfred Ammelburg completed a three-year apprenticeship in the medical drug business of Burkel frères in Geneva. From 1885 to 1890 he studied chemistry at the Technical University of Munich and the University of Freiburg. In Freiburg, he was in 1891 when Adolf Karl Ludwig Claus Dr. phil. PhD.
After a brief activity as a chemist at Pape & Co. in Ziegelhausen near Heidelberg from 1892 to 1893 and another activity as an assistant to Claus, he joined the Farbwerke, formerly Meister Lucius & Brüning, Höchst , as a chemist in 1894 . In 1909 he received power of attorney, in 1916 he became a member of the management and in 1918 deputy board member and head of the pharmaceutical department. When Farbwerke Hoechst merged into IG Farbenindustrie AG , he became a full board member and head of the pharmaceutical department of IG Farben on January 1, 1926.
With his scientific work on nitrodiazonaphthalenes, Ammelburg was one of the pioneers of diazo dyes. As the head of the pharmaceutical department, he had a decisive influence on the introduction of novocaine as a local anesthetic in surgery. Furthermore, he realized the commercial production of the salvarsan .
Alfred Ammelburg was a member of the Corps Cisaria Munich and the Corps Suevia Freiburg .
