Alfred Baldia (born March 6, 1913 in Vienna , † December 22, 1997 in Mistelbach (Lower Austria) ) was an Austrian pigeon fancier and entrepreneur .

Life

Alfred Baldia was born on March 6, 1913 in Ottakring , Vienna's 16th district , as the son of the architect Ferdinand Baldia (1860–1936). Even as a boy he owned pigeons in his parents' pigeon house in Ottakring. At first it was mainly Viennese high-flying pigeons , later also carrier pigeons . In 1934 he was a co-founder of the association “1. Viennese high-flying pigeon breeder and Jauker-Klub XVI "and received the first award in 1936 for his" high-flying pigeons ". In 1935 he was able to win the first big race from Marburg to Vienna with one of his carrier pigeons . In 1939 he had to enlist in the German Wehrmacht and, after several wounds, was sent to the army school in Berlin-Spandau to train as a carrier pigeon master in 1943 . In 1944 he was assigned the post pigeon post at the Bolfras barracks in Mistelbach. There he met his wife Anna Steininger, a relative of the former member of the National Council Mathias Dersch (1865-1943), whom he married in 1947 and with whom he had three children. In 1953 the trained master confectioner opened a café and pastry shop in Ladendorf ( Lower Austria ) and in 1958 a coffee house . In the same year he was given the management of the outdoor swimming pool newly built by the municipality of Ladendorf , which was expanded to include a natural ice rink built in 1964. In 1965, Alfred Baldia founded the 1st Weinviertel carrier pigeon association in Ladendorf, with which he organized several pigeon exhibitions. In 1966 he passed the judges test for carrier pigeons. In 1971 he was co-founder of the "Weinviertel Pigeon Breeders Association N 84" in Laa an der Thaya . In 1972 Alfred Baldia was able to achieve his greatest success with the carrier pigeon by winning the Austrian National Championship. Afterwards he devoted himself more and more to the pigeon breeds of his childhood. The preservation of the old Viennese bottlenose dolphin pigeons such as the “Viennese high-flying pigeons”, “Wiener Gansel”, “Viennese shorts” and “Wiener Röserlschecken” was particularly important to him. In the 1990s he became chairman of the "Committee of the united Viennese bottlenose dolphins high-flying pigeon clubs in Vienna" and remained so until his death.

In 1996 he became the Austrian national champion with his pigeons in the "Viennese short" division. In 1997 and 1998 his wealth of experience was preserved for posterity in two documentaries by the EPPS (European Pigeon Poultry Society).

Alfred Baldia was buried in Vienna in the Ottakringer Friedhof .
