Alfred Barye

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Alfred Barye , called Le Fils or Alf Barye (born January 21, 1839 in Paris , † 1882 ibid) was a French sculptor of the Belle Époque .

life and work

Bronze sculpture of a pheasant by Barye (1875)

Alfred Barye was born in Paris as the son of the sculptor Antoine-Louis Barye . He learned his craft in the workshop of his father, who was a renowned animal sculptor in his day. The relationship between father and son was shaped by conflicts that were sparked by the signatures on the works of the two. The younger Barye had some of his bronzes with “A. Barye ”, against which the father Barye raised an objection, who applied for a copyright to this signature and feared that he would be associated with the work of his son.

Alfred Barye specialized in the production of bronze statuettes. He always stood in the shadow of his famous father and fought for recognition as an independent artist. Most of his works are signed “A. Barye, fils ”, while the objects signed Barye or Barrye caused some confusion - intentional or not - among dealers and buyers and led to an argument with the father.

In collaboration with Émile Guillemin he created the sculpture The Arab Warrior Knight on Horseback , one of his most famous bronzes. He specialized in animal bronzes, especially racehorses, horses with riders or horses in motion, as well as orientalist figures.

Art trade

While bronzes by Antoine-Louis Barye are priced at an average of $ 10,000 on the art market and top prices are $ 300,000, bronze statuettes by Alfred Bayre have a significantly lower market value with prices between $ 5,000 and $ 15,000. Casts of bronzes by the two Barye, which are in demand by collectors because of their motifs, quality and size, are offered in different quality in the art trade. Statuettes after Barye are priced at around £ 600 to £ 1,000 and have already exceeded $ 3,000 in individual cases.

Because of the not always unambiguous signatures, there are still problems with attribution for trade and science.
