Alfred Bodenheimer

Alfred Bodenheimer (* 1965 in Basel , Switzerland ) is a Swiss literary scholar and author . He is professor for Jewish literary and religious history at the University of Basel . In addition to specialist publications, he is also the author of several crime novels.

life and work

Alfred Bodenheimer received a traditional Jewish education and undertook Talmudic studies at Yeshiva University in New York and at Yeshivat Hamivtar in Israel . In 1991 he completed his studies at the University of Basel with a licentiate in German Philology and History, and in 1993 he did his doctorate there with a thesis on the emigration of Else Lasker-Schüler to Palestine. After research and teaching activities in Israel and at the University of Lucerne and a habilitation at the University of Geneva , he returned to the University of Basel in 2003 as a professor of Jewish literary and religious history. From 2005 to 2008, Bodenheimer was also rector of the University of Jewish Studies in Heidelberg . From 2010 to 2012 he was dean of the theological faculty at the University of Basel. Here he has headed the Center for Jewish Studies since August 2010.

Bodenheimer published numerous scientific publications, including studies on Moses and the Eternal Jew , Jewish narratives and the mediation of traditions.
