Alfred Byrne (also known as Alfie Byrne , Irish Ailfrid Ó Broin , born March 17, 1882 in Dublin , † March 13, 1956 ) was an Irish politician and was a member of the British House of Commons and both houses of the Irish Parliament . However, he is remembered above all as the long-standing Lord Mayor of Dublin .

Byrne's political career began in 1912 when he was elected to the Dublin City Council ( Dublin Corporation ). In by-elections on October 1, 1915, he was elected to the House of Commons as a member of the Irish Parliamentary Party in the Dublin Harbor constituency. In the subsequent general election in 1918, he was defeated by his rival, Sinn Féin member Philip Shanahan . As a member of Dublin City Council, Byrne was elected Lord Mayor in 1930. He held this office until 1939, and again from June 1954 to July 1955. This makes him the longest-serving Lord Mayor in the history of the city.

In the 1922 elections for the 3rd Dáil Éireann , Byrne was elected as an Independent Candidate in the Dublin Mid West constituency. Re-elected several times, he was a member of the House of Commons until 1928, when he gave up his seat in the 6th Dáil to take up his mandate in the Seanad Éireann . On December 10, 1931, Byrne resigned as senator; his regular term would not have ended until 1934. In 1932, Byrnes was re-elected to the Dáil Éireann, to which he belonged until his death in 1956.

Alfred Byrne had been married since 1910 and had eight children, three daughters and five sons. Three of his sons, Alfred , Patrick and Thomas , were also MPs in the Dáil Éireann.
