Alfred Daniel

Alfred Daniel (born May 21, 1886 in Balingen ; † February 7, 1984 in Radolfzell am Bodensee ) was a German lawyer and Christian anarchist .

Descending from Swabian craftsmen (red tanners and book printers), father Adolf was a small publisher in Balingen who, like grandfather Wilhelm Daniel, published a daily newspaper. Alfred studied from 1904 jurisprudence to promotion in 1911 at the University of Tuebingen . In 1914 he worked as a lawyer in Stuttgart and defended Gusto Gräser, who was threatened with deportation . To do this, he initiated a public campaign with many celebrities. In 1915 he decided to conscientious objection . From 1921 to 1925 he belonged to the Christian revolutionary movement around Gregor Gog and Karl Strünckmann and was editor of the magazine Weltwende . Daniel was a follower of the theologian Christoph Blumhardts and also met the theologian Karl Barth in 1922 . He remained friends with Gusto Gräser. In 1926 he married the Heilbronn artist Els Daniel-Stroh , with whom he lived in Balingen and had a son. They separated in 1937 and were divorced in 1940. From 1926 he and two brothers published a Swabian daily newspaper, the Balinger Volksfreund , which had to be discontinued in 1933. In 1930 he sent an open letter to Church President Theophil Wurm "about the moral dubiousness of flying acrobatics " on the occasion of an airplane accident in Böblingen on September 18, 1930 with Fritz Schindler , in which he a. a. referred to the militaristic background. In 1937 he was expropriated by the National Socialists. He spent his old age in Radolfzell and edited the publications of the German Proudhon Archive .
