Alfred Helm (born January 30, 1932 ) is a former German football player. He played for VfB Pankow (1950 / 51.16 games, 0 goals), the BSG unit Pankow (1951/52, 24/5) and the BSG Stahl Thale (1952-1954, 59/13) in the GDR league , the top division of GDR football .

Athletic career

When the West Berlin Association of Berlin Ball Game Clubs introduced the contract player system in 1950 , the German Sports Committee of the GDR withdrew the teams playing in all of Berlin's football leagues and incorporated them into GDR gaming operations. VfB Pankow, who had previously played in the Berlin City League , was also affected . The Pankower were incorporated into the GDR league for the 1950/51 season. From November 1950, 18-year-old Alfred Helm also played in their league team. By the end of the season he played 16 point games, VfB ended up in last place in the table.

Since in addition to Pankow the Berlin SG Lichtenberg 47 was relegated, only one East Berlin team would have been represented in the 1951/52 Oberliga with Union Oberschöneweide . In order to adequately represent East Berlin, the company sports community (BSG) Einheit Pankow was founded and granted the right to start in the upper league. The VfB players were offered the opportunity to continue playing first division football with the BSG unit. One of the few players who accepted the offer was Alfred Helm. Although he was used on the first day of play, he was only a substitute for a long time afterwards. Only in the last third of the season did he play regularly and mainly as a right wing runner . In the 36-round season, he was used 24 times and scored five goals. The team, made up of numerous players with no experience in the league, never reached the first division level and was relegated just as without a chance like their predecessor VfB after a league season.

Helm then moved to the top division BSG Stahl Thale at the beginning of the 1953/54 season. There, too, he was called up from the start and played all 32 point games in which he scored five goals as a center forward and left winger. The BSG Stahl finished the season in fifth place and thus achieved the best result in their time in the league. At the same time, Helm was appointed to the squad of the newly founded GDR youth national team, for which he completed the first two international matches. In the major league Thale had to relegate from the major league after the 1953/54 season. The relegation was not to blame for Helm, because he was again one of the pillars of the BSG, was only missing in one point game and scored the most goals of the Stahl team with eight goals. He remained loyal to BSG Stahl in the second-rate GDR league , only missed one game of the 26 point games and was his team's top scorer with 13 goals. Although Thale had achieved a good midfield position in his season with seventh place, it was again not enough to keep the league, as the three seasons of the GDR league were merged into one season. For BSG Stahl, this meant saying goodbye to higher-class football for a long time, and Alfred Helm never returned there.
