Alfred Krab

Life

Krabbe studied physics at the University of Münster (1976–1979) and at the University of Heidelberg (1979–1983) and wrote his diploma thesis at the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy with Dietrich Lemke . He received his doctorate there in 1987 under Hans Elsässer at the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy and then moved to Reinhard Genzel as head of the infrared spectroscopy research group at the Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics in Garching. In 1997 he went to the DLR Institute for Space Sensors in Berlin - Adlershof as the scientific head of an astronomical working group, where in 1999 he took over the management of the infrared astronomy department. In 2000 he moved to the University of California Berkeley as a Senior Fellow , where he headed the Experimental Infrared Astrophysics group at the Physics Department.

Krabbe was appointed full professor of physics at the University of Cologne in 2003 and completed his habilitation in 2004 at the Technical University of Berlin . In 2009 he was appointed professor for aircraft astronomy and extraterrestrial space missions at the University of Stuttgart, combined with the management of the German SOFIA Institute.

Alfred Krabbe has been director of the Protestant Research Academy of the Union of Evangelical Churches (UEK) since the beginning of 2019 .

Alfred Krabbe is married and has several children.

Alfred Krabbe examines the centers of active galaxies and their interactions with their surroundings. He is also engaged in studying the contexts of black holes , particularly in the center of the Milky Way . Together with Reinhard Genzel, he discovered the cluster of helium stars near the black hole . Sometimes he also thinks about exoplanets .

As an experimentally oriented observing astrophysicist , Krabbe has also developed numerous scientific experiments and used them at many observatories . He is significantly involved in the development of astronomical infrared spectroscopy , especially imaging spectroscopy. A selection:

  • From 2018 co-investigator of ESBO DS: Study and prototype for an astronomical stratospheric balloon experiment
  • From 2012 Principal Investigator of FIFI-LS: Imaging Far Infrared Spectrometer for SOFIA , in operation
  • 2001–2011 Co-Principal Investigator of OSIRIS : Imaging near-infrared spectrometer at the Keck telescope , in operation
  • 1989–1999 Project manager: Infrared Star Catalog Tool for MIPAS onboard the ESA ENVISAT Satellite
  • 1995–1997 Project initiative for SINFONI: Diffraction-limited imaging near-infrared spectrometer for ESO , in operation
  • 1994–1996 Co-Investigator at MANIAC: mid-infrared camera and Fabry-Perot interferometer
  • 1990–1997 Principal Investigator of 3D: First imaging infrared spectrometer
  • 1988–1989 Principal Investigator of FAST: near-infrared Fabry-Perot interferometer and camera
  • 1983–1987 Dissertation: A near-infrared grating spectrograph for the Calar Alto Observatory
  • 1980–1982 Diploma thesis: Secondary mirror chopper suitable for space

Alfred Krabbe has headed the German SOFIA Institute (DSI) at the University of Stuttgart since 2009 . Alfred Krabbe has been a member of the German SOFIA Science Working Group (GSSWG) since 1997. From 1997 to 2009 he was a telescope project scientist and a member and later co-chair of the SOFIA Science Steering Committee (SSSC). In addition, he headed the SOFIA project office in Berlin from 1998 to 2009.
