Alfred Porges

Alfred Porges (born March 16, 1902 in Vienna ; † October 7, 1978 ibid) was an Austrian politician ( SPÖ ) and director of the Vienna Exhibition Center . He was a member of the National Council from 1947 to 1949 and a member of the Federal Council from 1953 to 1970 . In the second half of 1968 he was President of the Federal Council.

education and profession

Porges first attended elementary school and then graduated from secondary school. He then switched to a commercial academy , where he completed his Matura before beginning his studies at the University of World Trade in Vienna . Porges also studied political science at the University of Vienna and acquired the qualification to teach shorthand at secondary schools.

Porges initially worked in the private sector. He became unemployed and worked as secretary of the Social Democratic Party of Fünfhaus from 1932 until the Social Democratic Party was banned in 1934 . He then worked as a dispatcher for a food company from 1936 to 1945 and became head of the press office of Wiener Messe AG in 1946 after the Second World War. After taking over the position of authorized signatory in 1965, he became director of the board of Wiener Messe AG in 1966. In addition, he was awarded the professional title of Commercial Councilor.

Politics and functions

Porges joined the Social Democratic Party in 1919 and was an active member of the Social Democratic Party from 1920. In 1934 he was arrested for political reasons and sworn in as a member of the National Council on November 18, 1947 after the Second World War. He stayed in this position until November 8, 1949 and between 1959 and 1971 he was Vice President of the Free Trade Association of Austria. From 1960 he was also a member of the Vienna Chamber of Commerce and a member of the tourism section. From March 6, 1953 Porges worked as a member of the Federal Council, where he first took over the office of Vice President of the Federal Council in the second half of 1959. He held this office again in the first half of 1964 and was then again Deputy President of the Federal Council from July 1, 1965 to June 30, 1968. Porges crowned his career by being President of the Federal Council between July 1, 1968 and December 31, 1968, and again Vice-President of the Federal Council in the second half of 1968 and from January 1, 1969 to December 14, 1970.

Alfred Porges was buried in the Hietzinger Friedhof in Vienna in an honorary grave (group 17, number 23).
