Alfred Schaller

Alfred Schaller (born April 21, 1908 in Flüelen , † July 21, 1985 in Basel ; entitled to live in Wauwil and from 1948 in Basel) was a Swiss politician ( FDP ). He was President of the National Council from 1966 to 1967 .

Life

After graduating from college in Schwyz , he first found a job with SBB , where he worked as a station clerk. He later moved to Basel and studied economics at the University of Basel , where he received his doctorate in 1935 . After completing his studies, he first worked as a secretary and later - from 1941 to 1950 - as director of the Basel Rhine Shipping Office. After his election to the government council of the canton of Basel-Stadt in 1950, he devoted himself entirely to politics.

Parallel to his studies and his work at the Rhine Shipping Office, he built up his political career: from 1936 to 1941 he was President of the Young Liberal Movement, in 1938 he made the leap to the Grand Council of the Canton of Basel-Stadt, of which he was a member until 1950. In 1947 he was elected to the National Council, which he belonged to until 1978 and which he chaired from 1966 to 1967.

From 1950 until he took office as President of the National Council in 1966, he was also a member of the Basel city executive, where he headed the finance department. During this time, he was ex officio Chairman of the Board of Directors of Basler Verkehrs-Betriebe and - regardless of his offices - from 1956 to 1970 he was also Chairman of the Board of Directors of Basel Model Fair .
