Ahed Tamimi (2018)

Ahed Tamimi ( Arabic عهد التميمي, DMG ʿAhd at-Tamīmī ) (born January 31, 2001 in Nabi Salih , Palestinian Territories ) is a Palestinian anti-Zionist activist . Because of a violent attack on Israeli soldiers and other offenses she was detained in December 2017 in March 2018 an eight-month prison sentence convicted and end in July 2018 released from prison.

Family environment

Ahed Tamimi was born as the daughter of Bassem and Nariman Tamimi in Nabi Salih, a small village around 20 kilometers northwest of Ramallah in the West Bank . Since 2009, the residents of Nabi Salih have demonstrated almost weekly. The immediate reason for this was a dispute with Israeli settlers from neighboring Chalamish over land use rights, in particular about the settlers taking over a water source and bathing cave called "Ein al-Qaws". According to journalist Ben Ehrenreich , this spring and the surrounding land have belonged to the Tamimi family for generations. In January 2013, the settlers had to demolish the facilities they had illegally erected at the source due to a ruling by the Israeli Supreme Court . At the almost weekly rallies, which continued, stones were always thrown in the direction of the soldiers present, which, according to Bassem Tamimi, was "not violence, [but] part of the peaceful protest". The Israeli army used tear gas , synthetic skunk secretions , water cannons , rubber bullets and the occasional live ammunition to counter these riots . Two or three villagers, including Ahed's uncle Rushdie, have been killed and hundreds injured over the years. According to the Guardian newspaper , around 140 residents of the Nabi Saleh have been taken into custody and sentenced to pay the equivalent of several thousand dollars for fines and bail. According to her father, the family's house was originally supposed to have been demolished after protests in 2010 and had been the subject of operations by the Israeli military more than 150 times by 2017. Bassem Tamimi had served nine sentences in Israeli prisons for various offenses up to 2013 and is considered one of the leaders of the weekly protests. He advocates a one-state solution . The Palestinian Authority , however, is trying to negotiate a two-state solution with Israel and therefore rejects the actions of the Tamimis. Several members of the family had already fought against an independent Israel in Abd al-Qadir al-Husaini'sArmy of the Holy War ” during the Palestine War from 1947 to 1949 . Ahlam Tamimi, a cousin of Bassem from Nabi Salih, was an accomplice in the bombing of the Sbarro pizzeria in Jerusalem during the Second Intifada , in which 15 people, including seven children and one pregnant woman, were killed. Six weeks after the 1993 Oslo Peace Treaty , two of Ahed's cousins, Said and Nizar Tamimi, stabbed an Israeli and burned him alive in the trunk of his car. In December 2011, Mustafa Tamimi , a cousin of Ahed Tamimi's mother Nariman Tamimi, was killed by a tear gas grenade shot by Israeli soldiers after being thrown at a military vehicle. In October 2015, Bassem Tamimi shared a post on Facebook claiming that Israelis were arresting Palestinian children to steal their organs and that the Zionists were controlling the media to suppress this information.

activism

When an Israeli soldier tried to arrest Ahed Tamimi's brother in December 2012, she threatened him with a raised fist. Images and videos of this scene made her internationally known, especially on social media, as a symbol of the protests against the Israeli occupation of the West Bank, and brought her an invitation from the then Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan .

In 2015, Ahed Tamimi again came into the public eye when she physically attacked an Israeli soldier and bit the hand because he wanted to arrest her brother for throwing stones.

On December 15, 2017, Ahed took part in the demonstration in her village, which has taken place almost every week since 2009, in which around 200 Palestinians threw stones at Israeli soldiers as usual. According to the army, some of the stone throwers also entered the house of the Aheds family, although this is said to have taken place with the consent of the Tamimis. The soldiers then broke into the house, drove away the stone throwers and, according to the army, left two men at the entrance to prevent the stone throwers from returning. Ahed Tamimi then physically attacked the two Israeli guards together with her mother and a cousin, kicked them and slapped one of the two in the face without their reaction. After film recordings of the attack made by the Tamimis were distributed on the Internet, Tamimi was hailed as a "heroine" by the Palestinians. According to Tamimi's father Bassem, shortly before Ahed Tamimi's assault, her 15-year-old cousin Mohammed Fadl al-Tamimi was seriously injured in the head by a rubber bullet at close range. The army initially stated that it had no knowledge of this. He was admitted to a Palestinian hospital, put into an artificial coma, and regained consciousness a few days later.

A few days after the incident, Ahed and her two accomplices were arrested. The house was also searched and records of the attacks were obtained. 13 days after the arrest, twelve counts were brought before an Israeli military court. During an interrogation by Israeli authorities at the end of February 2018, the injured cousin Mohammed allegedly testified that his skull injuries in an accident were caused by the penetration of a bicycle handlebar grip. He was released after interrogation. His portrayal appears to be a defensive claim with which the teenager wanted to avoid being prosecuted for involvement in the rioting. It contradicts the statements of other witnesses as well as medical images made available by the “People's Committee of Nabi Saleh”, which were presented to the Israeli daily Haaretz , which is critical of the government .

On March 21, 2018, Ahed Tamimi was sentenced by an Israeli military court to eight months imprisonment and a fine of 5,000 shekels (the equivalent of 1,170 euros) after a consultation with the prosecution . She pleaded guilty on four counts and dropped the other eight charges. In early June 2018, she was denied early release for good conduct because she showed no remorse for what she did. She and her mother were released early on July 29, 2018. According to her lawyer, Gaby Lasky, this was common practice in Israel as the prisons were overcrowded. Tamimi announced that she wanted to continue the "resistance struggle". Her father added that she would be “forced” to hit a soldier in the face again if there were any more confrontations with the Israeli army in Nabi Saleh.

reception

Her followers see her as a national heroine in the fight against Israeli control of the West Bank. Opponents accuse her of deliberately trying to discredit Israel through her provocations. According to Harriet Sherwood of The Guardian , Bassem Tamimi and his children would never have known a life without controls, identification papers, incarceration, house demolition, intimidation, humiliation and violence. To Sherwood, however, many of Ahed's answers appeared rehearsed. According to Ben Ehrenreich, her western appearance contradicts the image of Palestinians conveyed in the media, so that alleged Israeli efforts to " dehumanize " the Palestinians would not work for her. The Knesset member Michael Oren , however, accused her that she only reason agiere in the unusual for female Palestinian teenager western clothing to Israeli soldiers to provoke even more. Palestinian commentators, while unanimously praising their courage, disagree on whether the video could be detrimental to their cause, as the "oppressors" would appear to be "gentle," or, on the contrary, support it by showing that even "unarmed" Resistance can be effective. The parents are accused of instrumentalizing Ahed and their other children in the media by giving interviews and having protests filmed. Ahed Tamimi's father describes them as belonging to the second generation of Palestinian children who grew up under the oppression of the Israelis.

In 2016, a documentary entitled "Radiance of Resistance" was made about Ahed Tamimi and the 5 years younger Janna Jihad Ayyad . Its presentation at the “Singapore Palestinian Film Festival” in Singapore was prohibited by the local media authority in 2018, as its presentation was distorted, fueled the conflict and could lead to tensions between the population and religious groups in the country. In 2016, she was invited to attend a US speaking tour entitled "No Child Behind Bars / Living Resistance," but the United States Department of State declined to issue an entry visa.
