Gideon Levy (* 1953 in Tel Aviv ) is an Israeli journalist and member of the editorial team of the daily Haaretz .

Life

His father Heinz Loewy fled the Nazis from the Sudetenland in 1939 by ship across the Mediterranean and ended up as an illegal refugee near Tel Aviv. Levy served in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) as a reporter for the army broadcaster Galatz (Ivrith: גלי צה"ל / Galei Tzahal) from 1974. He studied political science in Tel Aviv and worked for Shimon Peres from 1978-82 . Since 1982 he has been writing for the daily newspaper Haaretz , in which he's column since 1988 Twilight zone . published on the living conditions of Palestinians in the territories occupied by Israel in 2004 published a selection of the columns in book form under the title Twilight zone - life and Death under the Israeli Occupation . in the In the 1990s, he documented the situation of Jews in Russia after the collapse of the Soviet Union in a radio series. In 2014, in an opinion article in the Haaretz newspaper, he criticized Israel’s Operation Protective Edge in the Gaza Strip and claimed that Israeli air force pilots had civilians, especially children and women , carelessly, “as if with the joystick.” After this post, Levy m assive death threats and was only able to move in public with personal protection from mid-July 2014 until the end of the military operation.

In an article for the newspapers for German and international politics in 2015, Levy summarized his view of the political situation in Israel as follows: “And this is what it looks like, the truth: The two-state solution is dead (it never has the light anyway of the day); the Palestinian state will not exist; international law does not apply to Israel; Occupation will continue creeping but accelerated to annexation, which will quickly lead to the apartheid state; “Jewish” beats “democratic”; Nationalism and racism will enjoy government certification - even if they have been around for a long time. "

Positions on Zionism

Levy describes his attitude towards Zionism as ambivalent: In an interview with the pro-Palestinian website Electronic Intifada in 2010 he stated that he was an anti-Zionist insofar as he rejected Zionism's own conviction that Jews in Palestine had more rights than anyone else. However, he shares the also Zionist belief that the Jewish people have the right to live side by side with the Palestinians in Palestine, combined with an effort to redress the tragedy suffered by the Palestinians in 1948 . He rejects the "moderate Zionists" such as those of the civil rights party Meretz and the peace movement " Shalom Achschaw ", however, because they are against the analysis of 1948, which is indispensable for a peace solution. Compared to the Israeli left, the right is more honest. In 2015, in Haaretz , he complained that Israel and Zionism had been taken over by religious ultra-nationalists. Also in Haaretz in 2017, he responded to controversial statements by the Israeli Justice Minister Ajelet Schaked on the relationship between Zionism and general fundamental rights by stating that she had now made it clear in honest words that Zionism contradicts human rights and “is actually an ultra-nationalist, colonialist and perhaps even racist one Movement "is.

criticism

Levy's constant criticism of the policies of the State of Israel and their support by the majority of Israeli society is polarizing. Critics accuse him of an anti-Israel stance and of supporting a "Palestinian radicalism". On October 23, 2012, an article by Gideon Levy entitled “Most Israelis Support the Apartheid Regime in Israel” was published on the front page of the Haaretz newspaper . A fact check revealed that neither Levy's headline nor analysis was supported by actual survey data. After public criticism, Haaretz had to publish a correction. A lecture by Levy in Munich in May 2017 on the subject of “50 Years of Occupation” was accompanied by protests by supporters of the Israeli government who called for the event to be banned. Such a ban was also considered by the city administration, but was not issued due to the lack of a legal basis at the time. Levy, who considers international political pressure on Israel to be necessary, has been accused of being close to the pro-Palestinian BDS campaign , which its critics reject as anti-Semitic .
