Alfred Schmidt (born May 1, 1898 in Riisipere , † November 5, 1972 in Tallinn , Soviet Union ) was an Estonian weightlifter .

Athletic performance

Alfred Schmidt won the silver medal in featherweight (60 kg) at the 1920 Summer Olympics in Antwerp behind Belgian Frans De Haes . He achieved 210 kg (55-65-90) in a three-way fight, which consisted of one-armed snatch, one-armed thrusting and two-armed thrusting. Schmidt was 22 years old at the time.

In 1922 Schmidt became Estonian weightlifting champion. At the World Championships in Tallinn in the same year, Schmidt was disqualified because he weighed 200 grams too much.

In addition to his career as a weightlifter, Alfred Schmidt was also a referee in wrestling .

In the course of the estonization of first names and surnames in Estonia in the interwar period , he called himself Ain Sillak from 1936 . After the Second World War he was employed by the Soviet energy company Tallinngaas .
