Alfred Victor Philadelphe du Pont de Nemours (born April 11, 1798 in Paris , † October 4, 1856 in Greenville ( Delaware )) was a French - American chemist and entrepreneur . He was the eldest son of Eleuthère Irénée du Pont and as such inherited his company, the EI du Pont de Nemours and Company (commonly known as DuPont ), which he successfully continued after his father left.

biography

Alfred V. du Pont came from the respected du Pont family, he was born in Paris in 1798 as the son of Sophie Madeleine Dalmas du Ponts and the entrepreneur Eleuthère Irénée du Pont. As early as 1800, however, the family moved to the United States of America, where du Pont grew up and spent most of his life. After he finished his school career, he studied chemistry at Dickinson College in Carlisle ( Pennsylvania ) under Thomas Cooper , whose assistant he later became at the University of Pennsylvania . After an accident in his father's company, du Pont ended his academic career in 1818 in order to work there. There he initially worked as a chemist and later managed the company through a crisis before retiring due to illness at the age of 52.

Private life

Du Pont was married to Margaretta Elizabeth "Molly" La Motte, with whom he had seven children. After his death in 1856 he was buried in the du Ponts family cemetery.
