Karl Alfred Walcher Ritter von Molthein (born March 21, 1867 in Palermo , † December 12, 1928 at Schloss Feldegg near Pram) was an Austrian art historian and art collector.

Life

He was a son of the diplomat Leopold Walcher von Molthein (1824-1911) and brother of the architect Humbert Walcher von Moltheim (1865-1926). Intended for the diplomatic service, he first attended the Theresianum in Vienna and then studied law at the University of Vienna from 1888 to 1890 . However, he broke off his studies and turned to art history. In 1893 he began building up his collections, especially small sculptures and ceramics, and thus became a specialist in medieval art history and handicrafts, especially Renaissance ceramics. From 1902 to 1914 he worked as curator of the collections of Johann Nepomuk Graf Wilczek . During the First World War he was entrusted by the War Ministry with the management of art protection and head of the art department of the metal deposition collection. In 1915 he became a knight of the Franz Joseph Order . In 1917 he acquired Feldegg Castle , which he rebuilt and used as a summer residence until his death.

In 1893 he married Anselma, b. Welzl von Wellenheim (* 1866), from this marriage the son Johann Georg Walcher von Molthein (1903–1969) and the daughters Bernhardine (* 1898) and Leopoldine (* 1902) emerged.
