Alfred William Abdey

Alfred William Abdey (born July 21, 1876 in Brentfort , Middlesex , † August 18, 1952 in Brighton ) was a British organist, choir director, music teacher and composer.

Life

Alfred William Abdey's parents were Alfred Abdey (* April 6, 1847) and Elizabeth Mary Emerton (* 1851, † 1931). In 1902 he married May Lilian Thurgur (born May 3, 1878, † 1972 in Bournemouth ).

He initially received private music lessons. On November 8, 1900, he graduated with a Bachelor of Music from New College, (Oxford) . After studying organ with Frank Joseph Sawyer (1857-1908), he had an Associateship Diploma from the Royal College of Organists (ARCO). In 1901 he received a Fellowship Diploma from the Royal College of Organists (FRCO) . From 1898 to 1903 he was the organist and choirmaster at St. Andrew’s in Burgess Hill, Sussex. On May 22, 1901, he sang the tenor part in the oratorio The Prodigal Son by Arthur Sullivan at a performance of the Sacred Harmonic Society in St. Andrews . He also conducted other events of this society as a conductor, such as a performance of Mendeslssohn's Psalm 95 op.46 on May 12, 1903. From 1903 to 1910 he was organist at the Chapel Royal in Brighton, and from 1910 to 1921 at St Augustine in Brighton. In October 1914 he received the degree of Doctor of Music (D Mus) at Oxford University . He became an assistant director at the London College of Music. From 1917 to 1919 he was the bandmaster [Kapellmeister] of the Hampshire Regiment. After learning Braille , he taught at the Brighton School for Blind Boys.
