Alfred Zürcher

Alfred Zürcher (* 1889 ; † 1979 ) was a Swiss businessman and mountaineer .

Life

Alfred Zürcher lived as a merchant in St. Gallen . As a mountaineer, he made important first ascents, including the northeast face of the Eiger , the so-called Lauper route , and the northern edge of Piz Badiles . The key point of this route is called Zürcherplatte . He climbed the four-thousand-meter peaks in the Alps about 500 times, often on difficult routes.

He was mostly out and about with prominent mountain guides of his time, including Josef Knubel , Alexander Graven and Water Risch . He is considered to be one of the last representatives of Führer mountaineering.

Among other things, Zürcher was Vice President and honorary member of the London Alpine Club and a member of the Academic Alpine Club Zurich .

  • 1923, July 24th. Piz Casnile east ridge. With Walter Risch.
  • 1923, August 2nd. Sciora group , first crossing. With Walter Risch.
  • 1923, August 4th. Piz Badile , first ascent with Walter Risch.
  • 1929, Weisshorn , first total crossing with T.Graham Browne, Josef Knubel and Arthur Lochmatter.
  • 1932, August 20. Eiger north east face, first ascent with Hans Lauper , Josef Knubel and Alexander Graven.
  • 1942, July 28th, Rosenhorn north face. With Ernst Reiss .
