Alfredo Rodrigues Gaspar (born August 8, 1865 in Funchal , † December 1, 1938 in Lisbon ) was a Portuguese sea ​​captain , politician and Prime Minister (Presidente do Conselho de Ministros) during the First Republic .

Life

Rodrigues Gaspar began a military career as an officer in the Navy (Marinha Portuguesa) , in the course of which he rose to sea captain. In addition, after the establishment of the First Republic on October 6, 1910, he began a political career. As a member of the Partido Democrático , he was elected several times as a deputy of parliament ( Assembleia da República ).

First he was Minister for the Colonies from December 12, 1914 to January 25, 1915 in the cabinet of Vítor Hugo de Azevedo Coutinho . He later assumed this office in the governments of José de Castro and Afonso Augusto da Costa from May 17, 1915 to March 15, 1916.

From 1918 to 1919 he was President of the Lisbon City Council . Subsequently he was again colonial minister in the governments of Alfredo de Sá Cardoso from June 30, 1919 to January 3, 1920 and of António Maria da Silva from February 7, 1922 to November 22, 1923.

On July 7, 1924, he was to succeed Alvaro de Castro to the prime minister (Presidente do Conselho de Cabinet Ministers) appointed. Like many cabinets in the First Republic, his government was only in office for a few months and was replaced by José Domingues dos Santos on November 22, 1924 . In his cabinet he was also Minister of the Interior and from July 6th to July 22nd also Minister of Agriculture .
