The brewing Berger brewery in Alfstraße 36 in Lübeck was a brewpub founded on 3 May 1989 by Harald F. Berger.

brewery

Their concept is the brewing of Zwickelbier , as it was already made in the Middle Ages. The brewery houses the oldest vaulted cellar in Lübeck, built in 1225. Everything is made by hand, stored in wooden barrels and served. It is the last brewery in Lübeck still in existence today. On February 1st, 2006 a change of ownership took place, the new owner, Thomas Rosenhahn, continues the old tradition.

building

The vaulted cellar of the Art Nouveau building, which was built in the early 20th century , and the stairs contained in the cellars are listed as historical monuments . The stone-work cellar dates from the 13th century. Before, the oldest houses in Lübeck's old town stood here. During excavations on the property at Alfstrasse 36 and on the neighboring property at Alfstrasse 38 , the archaeologists for the preservation of historical monuments came across the foundations of wooden houses, which could be dendrologically dated between 1184 and 1195. Both wooden houses fell victim to one of the city fires of the 13th century, which according to the chronicle could have occurred in 1209. The successor building was erected over the rubble of the previous development; it was the oldest documented hall house with a simultaneous (!) Side wing in Lübeck. The basement of the previous building was included in the new building at the beginning of the 20th century. The building stands at a point where the Lübeck old town hill shows a particularly steep slope. In the case of the two outside portals, this is compensated for by shortening the skylight of the right portal to maintain the symmetry of the Art Nouveau facade ; on the left portal, the relief between the door and the skylight creates the height compensation. The relief shows Hermes with the caduceus and the skylight as Agraffe the relief of a blacksmith , one anvil holds in hands - sign for the industry in the 1919 resident until 1983 hardware wholesaler Vageler & Christiansen , whose signature adorns nor the cask.
