Algirdas Antanas Avižienis

Algirdas Antanas Avižienis (born July 8, 1932 in Kaunas ) is a Lithuanian computer scientist and professor , rector of the Vytauto Didžiojo universitetas .

Life

His father Antanas Avižienis was a colonel in the General Staff of Lithuania . In 1940 the Avižienis family emigrated from Anykščiai and from 1944 to 1950 he lived in Germany. In 1949 Algirdas graduated from the Lithuanian grammar school in Hanau .

From 1950 the Avižienis family lived in Chicago in the USA . From 1951, Algirdas completed a bachelor's and master's degree in electrical engineering at the University of Illinois and in 1960 he received his doctorate in computer science .

From 1962 he taught at the University of California in Los Angeles (UCLA).

He is particularly known for fault-tolerant computer systems and fault-tolerant computing (both on the hardware and system level and on the software level).

From 1990 he has been a member of Lietuvos mokslų akademija . He was one of the re-founders of the Vytauto Didžiojo universitetas (VDU) and its rector from 1990 to 1993. In 1992 and 2002 he was a member of the Kaunas City Council .

AA Avižienis has been an honorary citizen of Anykščiai district since 2012 .

In 2012 he received the Eckert-Mauchly Award for fundamental contributions to fault-tolerant computer architecture and computer arithmetic . He is a Fellow of the IEEE , received the AIAA Information Systems Awrd in 1979, the NASA Exceptional Service Medal in 1980, the Technical Achievement Award from the IEEE Computer Society in 1985 and the IFIP Silver Core Award in 1986.
