Aliyah Behmen

Alija Behmen (born December 25, 1940 in Split , Kingdom of Yugoslavia , † August 1, 2018 in Sarajevo , Bosnia and Herzegovina ) was a Bosnian politician of the Social Democratic Party (SDP). From March 12, 2001 to February 14, 2003 he was Prime Minister of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina and from 2009 to 2013 as the successor to Semiha Borovac mayor of the capital Sarajevo.

Behmen grew up in Mostar and studied at the Economics Faculty of the University of Sarajevo and received his doctorate with a thesis on transport costs and their influence on the country's economic development. From 1980 he worked as a lecturer and later as a professor at the Faculty of Transport and Communication at the University of Sarajevo. From 1998 he was a member of the parliament of the canton of Sarajevo for the SDP. In 2006 he was elected to the parliament of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina and was a member until January 2009, when he took over the post of mayor of the capital. His successor in 2013 was Ivo Komšić (also SDP).
