Alison Spedding

Alison Louise Spedding (born January 22, 1962 in Belper , Derbyshire , England ) is a British anthropologist and writer of fantasy and science fiction novels.

Life

Alison Spedding studied archeology and anthropology at King's College, and later philosophy . Between 1986 and 1988 she traveled to Bolivia for field research for the first time . In 1989, she earned a doctorate from the London School of Economics for PhD in social anthropology .

In 1989 Spedding moved to Bolivia . She dealt with the culture of the Aymara and taught anthropology and ethnology of the Andes at the Universidad Mayor de San Andrés in La Paz . Spedding has become a critic of the Bolivian government's tough policy on coca farmers there . In May 1998 she was arrested for possession of marijuana ; she was released on bail in 2000. While academic circles suspect the arrest was for political reasons, Spedding denied it.

Publications

While in Britain, Spedding wrote a trilogy of fantasy novels set in the time of Alexander the Great . In the novels, Alexander dies and a female protagonist, Aleizon Ailix Ayndra , takes his role in the story. She later wrote three novels in Spanish ( Manuel y Fortunato , El viento de la cordillera and the anarcho-feminist science fiction novel De cuando en cuando Saturnina ) and a collection of short stories ( El tiempo, la distancia, otros amantes ). Under the pseudonym "Alicia Céspedes Ballet" she published a play ( Un gato en el tejar ). Speddings' novel De cuando en cuando Saturnina was included in the list of the 200 most important literary works of Bolivia in 2009 on the occasion of the bicentenary of the Bolivian struggle for independence.
